Five Bitcoin Communities in Mexico (+ bonus project)

Gustavo Flores Echaiz

By Gustavo Flores Echaiz2024-11-14

As a Bitcoiner in Mexico, you probably want to meet like-minded people to explore ideas, collaborate on projects, and become friends. How can you do this?

There are 5 active communities across the country that you can join to further the Bitcoin mission.

Swapido Altar

Many Bitcoiners told us that they feel completely alone, and as Swapido, we can't let that continue, so we've written this guide to help.

If none of these because they're too far away from your home, we encourage you to create your own. We can help you with that and also add you to this list.

Here are the 5 Bitcoin communities in Mexico (with the bonus project).

1. La Casa de Satoshi in Mexico City

Founded in 2024

For years, the leading community in Mexico was The Bitcoin Embassy Bar in Mexico City. It opened its doors in 2018 in the tourist neighborhood of Roma Norte, but the owner Lorena decided to close it in March 2024. Many great memories were made here, and the Swapido team was part of those events.

Fortunately, there's now a new Bitcoin headquarters in the country called La Casa de Satoshi (Satoshi’s House), the home of freedom technology in Mexico City. At Swapido, we're very happy to be members of this space and use it as our headquarters.

2. Bitcoin & Lightning in Guadalajara, Jalisco

Founded in 2021

You may know Guadalajara for its tequila, mariachi music, and many gastronomy masterpieces, but did you know it also has a booming tech industry and hacking community?

Naturally, a tech-focused Bitcoin community has blossomed there, hosting monthly bitdevs meetups on which they go through all the technology-related news in the Bitcoin industry.

This is Bitcoin & Lightning Guadalajara.

3. Librería de Satoshi in Mexico City

Founded in 2021

If you want to study Bitcoin in a more serious way and with professional objectives, the right community for you is Libreria de Satoshi (Satoshi's Library). They offer online courses in Spanish to students worldwide, on the following topics:

  • Bitcoin 101 (free)
  • Lightning Network
  • Learning Bitcoin from the command line
  • BOLTs (Basics of Lightning Technology) Socratic Seminary
  • Bitcoin Bootcamp

Keep in mind that there’s a technical focus in these courses, and you might need to have programming experience for some of them.

They also organize occasional workshop events in Mexico City and in other cities.

4. Mayan Bitcoin in Merida, Yucatan

Founded in 2023

Based on the successes of circular economies in El Salvador and Costa Rica such as Bitcoin Beach and Bitcoin Jungle, some Bitcoiners thought of doing the same here in Mexico.

Mayan Bitcoin's mission is to promote Bitcoin education and adoption through university partnerships, community meetups, and outreach to local businesses in Merida, with the goal of establishing a Bitcoin standard in the region. They're working with Mi Primer Bitcoin, the Bitcoin Students Network, and local universities to train the next wave of Yucatan Bitcoiners.

5. BTC Isla in Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo

Founded in 2023

Is it possible to orange pill a whole island? That’s the challenge that Isabella Santos has embarked on in Isla Mujeres. The BTC Isla project's first stage is to host in-person classes of the educational program Mi Primer Bitcoin for locals but to eventually grow Isla Mujeres into a Bitcoin hub.

Bonus: Rancho San Satoshi, Baja California Sur

Founded in 2024

You’ve finally reached the bonus part of the blog post, the most ambitious project in this list.

Rancho San Satoshi is a sustainable, Bitcoin-powered community in Baja California, Mexico, focused on regenerative living, open-source education, and a circular economy.

It’s still just a render and an idea, but we believe that Jimi (CriptoZorro) will turn his dream into a reality over the next few years. The Swapido team will make sure to spend a few months a year there.

Conclusion

In this article, we've only included the meetups that are active, as there are many others like Bitcoin Queretaro and Bitcoin San Miguel that have been abandoned. There are also many Ethereum or other crypto ecosystem meetups that we don't cover in this article because it's about Bitcoin communities.

If we haven't included your community, please let us know. We will try to keep this blog post updated. Also, if you live in Mexico and want to start your own Bitcoin community/meetup and want to know how to get started, we are happy to help you organize one.
